So… we’re in the thick of holiday season, and if you’re worried about the collateral damage to your wallet, you’re not alone! There’s gift shopping, holiday entertaining, and of course, the need for some fabulous new party clothes. It’s like the spending never ends! Maybe, but that doesn’t mean your budget has to take such a serious hit; keep reading for some pretty smart tips for saving over the holidays!

1. Make a list:

Organization is key here, too. If you know what expensed are coming up, you won’t have to scramble at the last minute for gifts that you forgot about.

2. Set a budget:

This is the first tip because it’s the most important! Decide up front how much you want to shell out this year for holiday spending, and stick to it- no matter what! Figure out how much you want to spend for each gift, each party, etc., and set aside a little for unexpected expenses, and you should be fine.

3. Use coupons:

Save those coupons and look for coupon codes. No reason to pay full price when you can take advantage of discounts.

4. Redeem rewards:

Now’s a good time to cash in on the rewards you earned from shopping all year! You’d be surprised at how much you can save this way.

5. Score in the dollar store:

Every great gift does not always come from a high end retailer. Get to the dollar store for some really good buys at a fraction of the cost.

6. Cut out the extras:

If you’re going to be spending extra money this time of year, you’ll have to make a few cuts somewhere. Take a break from the fancy lattes and pack your lunches for a few weeks.

7. Look for free activities:

Check your community papers for free events like concerts, activities for kids, and other fun seasonal things. Look up free days at museums and other venues, and free events at your local library.

8. Stick to cash only:

It’s easy to swipe something on your credit card, but it will only come back to bite you later. Set aside the cash you want to spend each week and don’t let temptation make you reach for that card!

9. Barter:

It’s really so simple! Swap your awesome photography skills for your friends killer holiday cookies. Or maybe you’ll gift your friend some babysitting hours in exchange for a gourmet home cooked dinner. Be creative!

10. DIY:

Sometimes the best gifts are homemade. Get on Pinterest to find great ideas for gifts you can DIY.
